King Sunny Ade is 60!

For ages, i have been a freak fan of King sunny Ade. I grew up with the Turntable, Kenwood amplifiers and Vinyl disc around me. My musical taste was fashioned in his old serenade music. I was a chip of the old block. My dad loves King sunny Ade to bits, i could remember me and him always miming his lyrics and imitating the sound of his guitar and drums. Today, i feel those moments with nostalgia as i wondered at the music that further enhanced the “father to son” love between me and my dad. until i was 18 when i had a greater collection of KSA’s Albums, my dad has alway ranked the top of the table in my household, having a total of 40 albums by the great “Golden Mercury of Africa”.

Now, i seem to have stolen most of his album from my dad for my own collection…………Too bad of me..wheewwwwww…i guess its my love for KSA. He sure doesn’t mind me doing that, to the extent that he encouraged me to take some of his old vinyl disc to copy unto Audio tapes the last time i visited Nigeria. Wonderful Dad he is…………..

The king himself is now 60!. Sunday Isola Adeniyi Adegeye who still have a hearty mother became 60 years old in the month of september, Marking more than 40 years of musical landmark and career. As i watch in excitement, the birthday bash organised for him by the governor of Ondo state “Chief Olusegun Agagu” on the 16-22nd of october, i could remember some of his old tunes conjuring in my brains. I started Miming “easy Motion Tourist” and suddenly, as if i knew what he was going to sing about………..he broke into that same song with the unique voice that has paraded the entertainment scene for decades. I was so thrilled that i shot up from the sofa in excitement.

KSA who started his 10 piece band called the green spot in 1967, broke into limelight a year later when he did a hit single in praise of Stationery Stores football club.He further made more impression in the 70’s with his tracks like “nitori awa”, “E kilo f’omode”. With the infusion of guitars and some westernernised beats, as influenced by the late “fela Anikulapo Kuti”, KSA invented the idea of standing while performing as well as switching from the use of accordion to that of a keyboard while at thesame time changing his band name to African Beats…….., A feat that shot him to more stardom in the 80’s.
With his signing a record deal with island Reords in 1982, king sunny ade gained more popularity in the western World as a prominent Nigerian Figure on the entertainment scene, hereby earning him a title of “King of Juju music” and “Minister of enjoyment” respectively.

At 60, he has so many awards to his credit, with some of his albums going platinum, to becoming the only juju musician to have toured most European countries. King sunny Ade has, through his music promote the image of Nigeria as a country to be reckon with in the world of entertaiment.

As KSA marks his 60th Birthday, i wish him Long life and prosperity. Infact Omoba aladeniyi(as i fondly call him), please long years for you oooo………i still insst, i am expecting you as a special musician during my wedding oooooo…..it’s still my dream………..

Expressions!

Over the last couple of months, i’ve had readers of my blog email me about my own review of styl-plus new album titled “Expressions”,Judging from the fact that i am a great fan of the R”n”B group. However i have once written a review for Nigerian entertainment online magazine, so i thought i’d just post it on here without me having to reply tonnes of emails.

You can read it by clicking this link.

The Veil Row…..

For a very long time, i refrained myself from commenting on the recent story that has been making headlines in the UK. The story of a young woman (Aishah Azmi,23) who was suspended from her work as a classroom assistant because of her chosen wardrobe. I didnt really want to comment until i saw her on TV. She had everything covered up and the only visibility was a thin line with a spec of two dots ( which apparently signifies her two eye pupils).

Well, i personally see nothing wrong in putting on a veil, infact i have friends who do, and i have never consider it as alienation. But people who prefer to wear clothes this way should definitely know that there are some types of jobs they can’t do. I guess someone with a tattoo, or a very big belly will have a difficult chance of getting into the Police force also. I mean, i personally won’t mind, but i’d  be uncomfortable having a UNI lecturer teaching me in a classroom with veils on. The reason been that teaching is all about communication, and how can my “supposed” UNI lecturer communicate with me without his facial expression?. I won’t be able to tell if he meant what he says or not.

In this case, the class she was teaching are kids, it will be much more difficult trying to teach with veils on than without. Also, i believe there are other moslem women who covers their whole body and left just their face, like the pix below.

And for Christ sake, she actually was teaching at a church of England missionary school, how does she expect to be allowed to put on veils that way. If that seems somehow, can someone explain why i won’t be allowed to dress the way i like if i were a classroom assistant in a purely moslem school!

Naija Gan Gan!!!

Its been quite a while since i get back to the UK. my two week trip to Nigeria was quite hectic that i never had the time to blog. The totally crammed cafe with slow internet access didn’t help matters either. However, it was nice seeing my high school friends again. Most of them are now in their third year in UNI. I simply can’t believe how far they’ve gone ahead of me, since i am only starting my second year in UNI.
Lagos was my first point of call. Laden with overpopulation, i simply lost taste of the whole savoury of  Lagos. I felt so insecured, clutching my hands to my pockets and making sure that the little amount of money i take about with me won’t get picked-pocketed.
For once,i blamed myself for visiting the Mushin market on a rainy day as my brand new JJBsport suede shoe( i bought it for 60 pounds) condemned totally from the splatter of rainy dirts in the market. I simply had to get away on a bike that charged me 300 naira for a 2Km distance.

The banking system also is unconvincing, I guess most bankers need to take a crash course in customer service with the level they treat people like dogs. I remember going into a WEMA bank in Ikoyi, i had my international passport, my wema savings ID card on me to withdraw some cash.

“Can i get a cash withdrawal slip please”, i said to the lady sitting behind the customer service desk.
As if she’s just divorced her husband, she looked at me disdainfully and yelled back at me
“Dont you have a cash withdrawal slip?”.
I was so annoyed but kept my patience. I wonder how i’ll ask for a cash withdrawal slip if i already had one. She refused giving me one, later on, a man in agbada, with a expensive GSM Phone came in and requested for the same withdrawal slip and she gladly gave it to him. I was so annoyed that i walked over to her and give her the bashing of her life.
She eventually refused to give it to me, and i asked to speak to the manager. I was’nt granted audience. and i used my Connection power to give a big brother of mine who works in another branch of WEMA bank a ring, and he ask me to put one of the staff on the phone which i did. THey later on attended to my request. Five minutes later, i was asked how much i wanted to withdraw and i withdrawed 250,000 Naira. She was appalled at the amount i withdrawed that she looked at me in a apologetic way. i simply shrugged and went my own way. I guess she thinks that i was only going to withdraw 5,000 naira, so she does’nt give a shit* about me.

I simply got a way out of the situation, i opened another account with Guaranty trust Bank. At least no one will care about how much i want to withdraw or not.

Ilesa was very dry, except that all my childhood friends were around and we went down memory lane over bottles of soft drinks with bread and Epa. I particularly shunned Mr.Biggs and Tantaliziers for the “iya Basira” styled food. Each time i eat out, its always in a cafetaria. Since such opportunities only abound during my stay.

I suddenly become an essential commodity as so many people who don'’t even know me got my number and started calling me. I recieve not less than 30 calls in a day. I eventually left without telling anyone about my leave.

Getting back to the UK was a bit stressful, it felt like i had been away for months. I had bills piled up, waiting, i had course work, Household chores that i left behind due to my “going home” excitement, Work pressure e.t.c I have decided to do them all, one at a time, but just before i finish ‘em, i am taking my time catching up with gist on Nairaland, and also replying mails-I had 300 mails in my inbox and 4500 in my Bulk Folder when i got back!( I aint Joking).

I came back a bit weirder than before anyway, as there are other ideas i got off my trip. I hope to share them with you later on in the Future. only God knows when next i’ll come to Nigeria, Until then……i am going to enjoy myself while in the UK!
